Be Careful Poem Interpretation
Be Careful is a rhythmic poem with set patterns that speaks volumes on important ideas in life. Through the careful choice of words and repetitive nature of the poem, the meaning is expressed. The idea of Be Careful is how a simple thought develops into so much more. It is encouraging a good moral compass that should dictate one's life. The general idea is that one should be careful of each aspect from the very simplest to the most general as each builds on one another and ultimately becomes your future.
The poem begins with a warning to be careful of your thoughts. It then goes onto mention that the thoughts become words. The words become actions, actions become habits, habits become character, and ultimately character becomes your destiny. Destiny is considered in this poem to be the highest and most important are to be careful, but the poem makes clear that one should watch out even for his or her own thoughts because thoughts escalate into what one actually becomes and what one actually does.
The prevailing notion through the repetition of the line, "Be Careful," which is repeated four times in the eight line poem is that one should not take things for granted and act out of line. Even in the smallest details one should have good thoughts as bad thoughts will turn into bad actions and thus bad habits and the cycle will continue indefinitely. Be Careful is thus an effective poem and one in which its point is not only verbally articulated, but articulated through the form and expression of the poem as well. It is remarkable that such a short and simple repetitive poem can have such an emotional impact and even have a twist at the end as destiny is an important aspect of life that everyone tries to make the best. Destiny is the entire future and how the future effects not only a person, but others around that person as well, and the fact that thoughts will impact destiny means that thoughts are important and every single action of a person is important in the bigger scheme of things.
